James Hunt and Niki Lauda fought a season long battle over the 1976 World Championship. The title would only be decided at the final race of the season at the Fuji circuit in Japan. In atrocious conditions Lauda pulled into the pits on the second lap to withdraw from the race. Hunt battled the conditions and a puncture to eventually take 3rd place and seal the title by a single point. Mario Andretti won the race for JPS Lotus.
