Mike Hawthorn in the Jaguar D Type thunders onto the Mulsanne straight, closely followed by Fangio in his Mercedes 300SLR. The opening hours of the race saw the two swap the lead on numerous occasions. Hawthorn would go on to win the event after the withdrawal of the Mercedes team.
